“We are here to laugh at the odds . . . and live our lives so well that death will tremble to take us.”
Ed Lorn, what can I even say to you at this point???? Oh wait, I know . . .
(The literary variety, of course. I don’t want Mrs. Ed kicking my a$$.)
In case you aren’t aware I’m friends with Edward Lorn, so when I saw he had a book up on NetGalley I was all over requesting it. Luckily for me, NetGalley has realized . . . .
Ha! Yeah right. Anyway, by some miracle they didn’t reject me and I was thrilled . . . and then I found out this was actually #2 in the Larry Laughlin series so I had to go get #1 and read that right quick first. So here we finally are with are with Pennies for the Damned. This go ‘round Larry is kind of a shell of his former self. He’s lost things that were very important to him and has retired from the gun-for-hire trade. Well, almost. He still has one more bad guy he wants to take out, but this time he’ll be doing it for free. Right when Larry’s ready to rid the world of ol’ Daddy Dearest his plan gets foiled by some not-so-great assassins who have been hired to take out Larry, and apparently Larry’s brother Jaime as well. It’s up to Larry to stop the bad guys before the bad guys whack Jaime. Along the way he’ll make a new friend . . . .
and team up with an unlikely compatriot . . .
Then things get a bit gross . . .
No, I’m talking seriously gross . . .
Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
I’ll be the first to say Ed Lorn’s books aren’t for everyone. You can’t be squeamish and your trigger level has to ride pretty much at zero. If you think you have those requirements, I ask WHY THE F*&^ AREN’T YOU ALREADY READING THESE BOOKS?!?!?!?!. This baby was pedal to the metal of non-stop action with a surprising blend of humor, pop culture references that made my dorky self grin, and a main character you can’t help but love – even when his entire life seems to be nothing but a “wonderfail” . . . .
If you’ve already read Hope for the Wicked you know that Ed is not apologetic about breaking his reader’s hearts. Let me tell you, you ain’t seen nothing yet. This one was more along the lines of . . . .
I can’t wait to see what he has planned for the scumbags come Book 3 . . .
But I have a feeling Larry would say something along the lines of . . .
